Pre-qualification
Pre-qualification is a screening stage that admits only suppliers meeting defined thresholds — financial capacity, experience, insurance, certifications — into the competition that follows. It moves the pass/fail test ahead of the price or technical evaluation, so the buyer compares a filtered field.
Construction uses its hardest form: trades and subcontractors prequalify for a project's bidders list before tender documents are even issued. Private buyers prequalify vendors into approved-supplier systems before purchase orders can flow. For suppliers the stakes are documentary: prequalification is won on organized records — financials, safety statistics, references — not persuasion, and firms that keep a standing qualification file clear these gates while competitors assemble paperwork at the deadline. Fail one, and the best price in the field is irrelevant.
